What Is a Dispersal Draft?

A dispersal draft is a special type of draft used in dynasty fantasy football when one or more managers leave a league and their rosters need to be redistributed to new (or remaining) managers.

How It Works

When a manager leaves a dynasty league, their players, draft picks, and other assets don't just disappear. Instead, those assets are pooled together and distributed through a dispersal draft. Here's the typical process:

  1. 1
Players are pooled — All players, draft picks, and assets from the departing team(s) are combined into a single draft pool.
  2. 2
A draft order is set — The league determines the order in which the new or remaining managers will pick. This can be randomized, based on standings, or decided by the commissioner.
  3. 3
Managers draft from the pool — In a snake draft format, managers take turns selecting players and picks from the pool until every asset has been claimed.
  4. 4
Rosters are updated — Once the draft is complete, each manager adds their new selections to their existing roster.

When Do Leagues Use Dispersal Drafts?

Dispersal drafts come up in a few common situations:

  • Manager(s) leaving the league — The most common scenario. One or more managers quit and their rosters need new homes.
  • League restructuring — When a league reduces size (e.g., 14 teams down to 12), the extra rosters are dispersed among continuing managers.
  • Orphan team redistribution — Instead of asking a new manager to take over a bad roster as-is, the league can disperse the assets more fairly.

Tips for Running a Smooth Dispersal Draft

Agree on the rules upfront

Decide on draft order, number of rounds, pick timers, and whether future draft picks are included before starting.

Use a dedicated tool

Spreadsheets and group chats are error-prone. A dedicated draft board with timers and notifications keeps things organized and fair.

Set reasonable timers

Slow drafts that stretch over days work best with longer pick windows (4-8 hours). Live drafts can use shorter timers (2-5 minutes).
