What Is a Startup Draft?

A startup draft is the first draft of a new dynasty league. Every manager begins with an empty roster and selects from the full universe of NFL players — vets and incoming rookies — over a long, multi-round draft that builds the foundation of their dynasty.

The mechanics

How It Works

Unlike a redraft league, a startup builds a roster you keep for years. Most leagues run 20 to 30 rounds and the picks you make stick with you long after the season ends. The flow:

  1. 01
League rules are locked in — Scoring format (1QB vs. Superflex, PPR variant), roster construction (QB / RB / WR / TE / FLEX counts), and number of bench / IR / taxi spots.
  2. 02
Draft order is set — Randomized at the start, or assigned by the commissioner. Most startups use a snake format with optional 3rd-round reversal.
  3. 03
Managers draft from every NFL player — The pool spans every fantasy-relevant player in the league, from established veterans to incoming rookies.
  4. 04
Trades and waivers fill the gaps — The startup sets your foundation; future rookie drafts, trades, and the waiver wire grow it from there.

Strategy Beats

A startup is the most consequential draft you'll do in a dynasty league. A few principles most experienced managers agree on:

  • Win windows take years to open — Don't over-index on production from last year; bias toward age and trajectory.
  • Quarterbacks anchor Superflex — In SF leagues, the top of the QB tier goes early and stays valuable. In 1QB it's the reverse: wait.
  • Stack rookies — Young players grow into long-term value; if you're building from scratch, lean into the rookie class.

Tips for Running a Smooth Startup

Pick a pace and stick with it

A 25-round startup with a 24-hour timer can stretch over weeks. Some leagues run live in a single evening; others are slow drafts over a month. Pick one and set expectations upfront.

Confirm roster construction in writing

Disagreements about taxi squads, IR, and bench depth surface during the draft when it's too late. Lock in roster slots with the commissioner before round one.

Trade picks if you have a vision

Trading inside a startup is allowed in most leagues. If your roster build calls for stacking a position, consolidating picks can land you the player you need.
