What Is an Orphan Team?
An orphan team is a dynasty roster left behind when a manager leaves the league. Rather than disperse the assets through a draft, the commissioner lists the whole team for someone new to take over as-is.
The mechanics
How It Works
Listing an orphan team is the fastest way to get a new manager into an active dynasty league. The new owner takes the roster, picks, and any standing obligations:
- 01The commissioner posts the team — Roster, future picks, league rules, and any buy-in are published so prospective managers can size up the opportunity.
- 02Interested managers apply — Applicants reach out via the listing. Some leagues evaluate fit (longevity, engagement); others take the first serious responder.
- 03The new manager takes over — They inherit the roster intact: starters, bench, taxi squad, IR, all future picks, and any active trades or waiver positions.
- 04Buy-in changes hands — If the league has dues, the new manager pays in and the outgoing manager is settled.
Use cases
Why Leagues List Orphans
Listing an orphan is usually preferred over running a dispersal draft when:
- ▸Only one team is leaving — A single orphan rarely warrants the effort of a full dispersal across the rest of the league.
- ▸The roster is reasonably balanced — A team with both talent and future picks is attractive to a new manager. A barren roster usually triggers a dispersal instead.
- ▸Speed matters — Mid-season departures, waiver-wire emergencies, or offseason timing pressure all favor the immediate handoff of an orphan listing.
Due diligence
What to Look For Before Taking Over
Inheriting a roster is faster than drafting one — but the roster isn't the only thing you're inheriting. Things to confirm before saying yes:
- ▸Pick ownership — Confirm which future picks the team actually owns. Traded picks aren't always obvious from the platform UI.
- ▸Outstanding trades — Make sure there are no half-completed deals waiting on you to approve or honor.
- ▸League activity level — Joining a tight, active league is fun. Joining one that's circling the drain isn't. Ask about owner engagement before you commit.
Compare
Orphan Team vs. Dispersal Draft
| Orphan Team | Dispersal Draft | |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets the assets | One new manager | Pool redistributed across the league |
| Speed | Immediate handoff | Multi-round draft |
| Best when | Roster is balanced | Roster has imbalance or value gaps |
| Effort | Low | Higher — coordinates the league |
